Compares-Text started as a tool for comparing text, documents, images, spreadsheets, and folders. Today we're excited to announce five powerful new comparison tools aimed at developers, DevOps engineers, QA teams, and anyone who works with structured data. Every one of them runs free, with no sign-up required.
Here's a complete rundown of what's new and how to use each tool.
1. Code Compare
The new Code Compare tool is purpose-built for source code, going well beyond a plain text diff. It supports 12+ programming languages including Java, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, PHP, C#, C++, SQL, Go, Ruby, Rust, and Shell/Bash.
What makes it special:
- Ignore Comments — focus only on functional changes by stripping out single-line and block comments before comparing. Perfect when one version simply added documentation.
- Ignore Whitespace — normalise indentation and blank lines so reformatting doesn't show up as a change.
- Paste or Upload — paste code directly, or upload two source files and let the language be auto-detected from the file extension.
- Git-style side-by-side diff — added, removed, and changed lines highlighted in a familiar layout.
Use it to review pull requests, compare two versions of a function, or check what changed between two releases of a script.
2. Database Schema Compare
Database migrations are risky, and knowing exactly what changed between two schema versions is critical. The new Database Schema Compare tool parses SQL DDL and shows you a structured difference report.
It supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and Oracle syntax, and detects:
- Added tables — tables present in the new schema but not the old
- Removed tables — tables dropped in the new version
- Column changes — added columns, removed columns, and changed column definitions (type, length, nullability)
- Index changes — new or removed indexes and keys
- Foreign key changes — added or removed relationships
Paste two CREATE TABLE scripts, or upload two .sql dump files, and expand any changed table to see the precise differences. It's an essential pre-deployment safety check for any team running database migrations.
3. API Response Compare
When you're migrating an API from v1 to v2, or debugging why two environments return different data, the API Response Compare tool gives you an instant answer. Enter two URLs — for example https://api-v1.example.com/users and https://api-v2.example.com/users — and it fetches both, then compares:
- Response body — a full line-by-line diff, with JSON automatically pretty-printed for readability
- HTTP headers — a table of every header that differs, filtering out noisy per-request values like timestamps and request IDs
- Status codes — flagged prominently if they don't match
- Performance — the response-time difference in milliseconds between the two endpoints
It supports both GET and POST requests and works with REST and GraphQL APIs. (For security, requests to internal/private network addresses are blocked.)
4. Log File Compare
Comparing log files manually is painful. The new Log File Compare tool is built specifically for application.log, server.log, nginx.log and similar files. Beyond a basic diff, it understands log semantics:
- New errors — automatically surfaces ERROR, CRITICAL, and FATAL lines that appear in the second file but not the first
- New warnings — highlights warnings introduced in the newer log
- Resolved errors — shows errors that were present before but are now gone
- Pattern detection — colour-codes lines by severity so problems jump out visually
This is invaluable when comparing logs from before and after a deployment, or diffing a healthy server's log against a misbehaving one to spot what's different.
5. Website Compare
The Website Compare tool fetches two live URLs — say https://site1.com and https://site2.com — and compares them across three dimensions, organised into tabs:
- HTML differences — a line-level diff of the page markup (with dynamic scripts and nonces filtered out to reduce noise)
- SEO & Metadata — a side-by-side comparison of title tags, meta descriptions, keywords, Open Graph tags, canonical URLs, and counts of images, links, and scripts
- CSS differences — a diff of the inline stylesheet content
It's perfect for verifying a site migration, comparing staging against production, or auditing SEO changes between two versions of a page.
Plus: XML, JSON & CSV Support
We've also expanded existing tools. The Document Compare tool now accepts XML and JSON files in addition to PDF, DOCX, and PPTX — and JSON is automatically pretty-printed before comparison so structural changes are easy to spot. The Excel Compare tool now accepts CSV files alongside XLSX and XLS.
Everything Stays Free and Private
All of these tools follow the same principles as the rest of Compares-Text: no sign-up, no installation, and no cost. Comparisons are processed securely, and we don't store your files or data. Whether you're a developer reviewing code, a DBA planning a migration, or a QA engineer diffing logs, these tools are ready to use right now.
